MK Dons won 3-0 against Tranmere at Stadium MK and were promoted to League One.

Goals from Nathaniel Mendes-Rhyne, Alex Gilbey and Callum Patterson gave the Dons the win they needed to seal promotion.

Victory will ensure the Dons return to League One for the first time in three seasons, leapfrogging Bromley into the top of the table. Tranmere remain 20th, one point above the drop zone, and have yet to confirm their League Two status.

Quick-fire doubles from Nat Mendes-Lyne and Alex Gilbey put MK Dons ahead against Tranmere and move them closer to promotion.

The host team took the lead after 18 minutes. Mendes-Rijn was the first to attempt a clearance and fired the opener past Tranmere goalkeeper Marco Marosi.

Tranmere almost equalized after Kaiin Woolley missed a shot from close range, but MK Dons extended their advantage three minutes after taking the lead. Captain Gilbey collected Mendez-Rhein’s pass and slotted the ball into the bottom corner of the goal.

Tranmere substitute Christian Dennis had a goal ruled out for offside just after half-time and had a shot denied by Craig McGillivray.

However, the hosts scored in the 77th minute when Patterson took aim at Liam Kelly’s free-kick.

MK Don secures promotion, Warne delighted

MK Dons manager Paul Warne:

“I can’t say whether 3-0 was a good thing or not because we almost conceded a few times, but we could have scored more goals. But I’m really happy.

“Tranmere didn’t give up and Pete organized them to fight for him which was great but in the end we won the game brilliantly.

“I’m really proud to get promoted again and have my mother, daughter, son and wife all here. But I’m just happy and excited for the players.”

“They look so happy and I get emotional about things like this. There aren’t many really great days in your life. The fact that we were able to come together and accomplish that for the city, the players, their families and the owners, I think that’s even greater than the promotion.”
