St Helens held on for an 18-12 win at home to Wakefield Trinity on Saturday to move level with Leeds Rhinos at the top of the Super League table.
Saints dominated the first half and although Owen Dagnall’s try in the fifth minute was ruled out on review, Dagnall converted Jake Davies’ goal in the 12th minute to give Saints the lead.
Six minutes later, Johnny Lomax teed up Kyle Feldt’s cross for his second try, and Harry Robertson’s interception led to Tristan Saylor scoring a touchdown to make it 16-0 at the break.
However, Wakefield gave Saints a second chance in the 55th minute with a knock-on, which Tyson Smoothie accepted and entered the match.
Jackson Hastings extended Saints’ lead with a penalty in the final minute, but it was the margin Saints needed as Caius Fertili took a great pass from Jake Trueman and headed home.
St Helens manager Paul Lawrie told Sky Sports: “It wasn’t a classy game today, but we have to remember that we are playing a confident Wakefield team. They have been targeting this game for a while, but they are a challenging team defensively so at times they can look disconnected and chaotic.”
“To be honest, I didn’t enjoy the second half at all. We were asking for some things. I thought there were some dangerous passes forward, but that’s what happens when you get a little nervous.”
Wakefield coach Darryl Powell said: “We had some soft tries in the first half, but I think we were very aggressive in the second half. They had a pretty tough game and I think we felt it was a pretty close game.”
Bradford Bulls 12-48 Hull KR
Mikey Lewis scored four tries as defending champions Hull KR moved into the Super League play-offs for the first time this season with a thumping 48-12 win over Bradford at sunny Odsal.
Willie Peters’ side overcame a momentary blunder late in the first half to dominate their injury-hit opponents and leapfrog their struggling rivals Wigan, who had fallen eight points behind after a difficult start, to move into fifth place.
Lewis’ leadership was backed up by a flawless kicking performance from Reece Martin, who scored all eight of his team’s tries, while the Bulls had to settle for tries from Brandon Lewis and Greg Eden.
The repaired Bulls, with eight of their starting XI missing through injury, always looked like they were running away from anything after a tough series of defeats, but Rovers’ worst fears looked set to become reality as Rovers scored four tries in the opening 15 minutes.
