Chris Billam-Smith will be appearing on Sky Sports when he boxes in his hometown of Bournemouth on June 6th.
However, his opponent, Ryan Rozicki, is a fierce puncher and strong operator who promises to put Billum Smith into a serious fight.
That could make for a tense night for trainer Shane McGuigan. “Our problem with Chris is he’s always on a tear,” McGuigan told Sky Sports.
“It’s all about entertainment, it’s an exciting fight, and it’s true that Chris Billum-Smith vs. Ryan Rozicki is going to be an exciting fight.”
Billam-Smith could have been forgiven for taking the easier option in this homecoming game. Instead, he will fight a tough and highly regarded opponent.
“That’s what Chris Billum-Smith is all about,” McGuigan said. “(Rosicki) is going to be a big puncher.
“You know what’s going to happen with him, he’s got 20 of his 21 wins by knockout. He lost once to (Oscar) Rivas, but he made some solid shots there. He obviously has the minerals. We’re going to have to make the fight suit Chris Billum-Smith.”
He added: “But there’s no need to run around looking for him. It’s going to be an exciting fight. It’s going to be a great advertisement for Zuffa Boxing, who are making their first fight in the UK.”
Route to Opetaia?
Jay Opetaia, widely regarded as one of the best cruiserweights in the world, is also promoted by Zuffa Boxing. He is a future target for Billam Smith.
“Opetaia wants the fight, we want the fight, and this is the best possible fight,” McGuigan said.
“At this stage in Chris’ career, names matter. What’s important is that he’s well compensated for his work and that he’s on the best platform to get the best exposure.
“Because we believe he will beat him.”
