Mohamed Salah has sustained a “minor” muscle injury but is expected to return to Liverpool before the end of the season, the club has announced.
The 33-year-old collapsed holding his leg during Liverpool’s 3-1 win over Crystal Palace on Saturday and was substituted just before the hour mark. Salah appeared emotional as he took time to applaud the Anfield crowd as he left the field.
The Egypt international announced last month that he had reached an agreement with Liverpool to end his nine-year stay on Merseyside, and the final day’s game against Brentford at Anfield looks to be the perfect opportunity to end his stay at the club.
Although the exact timing of his return has not been revealed, an update on the club’s website suggests that Liverpool fans will likely see the Egyptian in a club shirt again before the end of the campaign.
“Liverpool FC can confirm that Mohamed Salah is expected to be able to play again before the end of this season,” the club said in a statement.
“Number 11 came on as a substitute in the second half of the Premier League game against Crystal Palace at Anfield last Saturday.
“The issue that caused his withdrawal was confirmed to be a minor muscle injury.
“However, Salah is expected to return to action at the end of the 2025-26 season and ahead of his departure from the Reds this summer.”
The news is also a welcome boost for Egypt ahead of their World Cup campaign. Salah suffered an injury scare before his country last qualified for the competition in 2018, but his participation rate was less than 100 per cent.
Van Dijk: ‘Injury won’t prevent Salah from getting a fitting farewell’
Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk believes Salah will receive a well-deserved red card even if he plays his final game for the club.
“I know he is doing everything he can to get back on the pitch as soon as possible,” Van Dijk said.
“When you get injured at this stage of the season, especially in the situation he’s in, with only two home games left, there are a lot of different emotions going through your mind.
“I hope he doesn’t last long. Maybe he’ll be back next week, maybe not. I don’t know.
“He will be sent off regardless. I don’t think that will happen at the moment, but we shouldn’t think too far ahead.”
“Knowing Mo, he’s recovering quickly and has the right people around him, so we’ll see.”
