Ryder Cup 2027: Scottie Scheffler will seek input on Team USA captain selection to support Jim Furyk as leader | Golf News

Scottie Scheffler said he would consider getting more input on selecting future Team USA Ryder Cup captains if asked to contribute by the PGA of America.

On Friday, Jim Furyk was announced as Team USA’s captain for the 2027 tournament at Adair Manor. The 2003 U.S. Open champion also served as captain in 2018, when Team USA lost to Europe in Paris.

Tiger Woods was the frontrunner to replace Keegan Bradley, but he was removed from consideration after deciding to take a break from golf following a car accident in March.

Furyk, 55, has since been appointed by the PGA of America and has the difficult task of winning the Ryder Cup on the road as Team USA looks to bounce back from back-to-back losses in Rome and New York.

Questions are growing about whether Furyk is the right person to lead America to glory.

Ahead of this weekend’s Cadillac Championship in Miami, Scheffler was asked if he had been consulted by the PGA of America about potential candidates to take over the job.

Matt Fitzpatrick and Scottie Scheffler had contrasting second shots in the playoff hole, with Fitzpatrick winning his second RBC Heritage title.

“No, I have no opinion at all,” Scheffler said. “I found out when you did it.

“Do I want an opinion? If they want an opinion from me, I can get an opinion. But the PGA of America runs the Ryder Cup, and it’s not the PGA Tour, it’s not the players, it’s the PGA of America, it’s not us.”

“So if they wanted to know what I thought, they would have my phone number. I had to fill out a lot of paperwork to get into the tournament.”

Team USA has a Ryder Cup Committee made up of three PGA of America executives and three PGA Tour players. Scheffler said Jordan Spieth is one of those people and that he plans to ask about the committee in the future.

Furyk, who debuted in the biennial event in 1997, has competed in every Ryder Cup for the past 30 years, either as a player or in a leadership position.

As a player, Furyk played in nine consecutive tournaments from 1997 to 2014, but was on the winning team in only two of them.

Appearing on the Sky Sports Golf podcast, Nick Doherty believes comparisons between Scottie Scheffler and Tiger Woods, who have finished in the top four for eight years in a row, are justified.

Scheffler, who made his Ryder Cup debut with Whistling Straits in 2021, played under Furyk in the 2024 Presidents Cup and praised the 55-year-old’s leadership qualities.

“Well, Jim and (his wife) Tabitha are really great people,” Scheffler said. “Jim is a really good leader. He’s very organized in the way he does things. I think in Jim’s case, he has so much experience in so many team events, both playing and captaining.”

“He’s been with those teams for what seems like an eternity. He’s had a very long career here and was very good for a long time. He was captain and assistant captain in the Ryder Cup.”

“I think he brings a lot of knowledge and experience. He has his own way of doing things and is very experienced in that role. I think he’ll do a great job.”

Scheffler aims for career grand slam

Scheffler enters the week at Trump National Doral without a win at both the Masters and RBC Heritage. He fell one stroke short of Rory McIlroy at Augusta National and lost to Matt Fitzpatrick in a playoff at Havertown Golf Links.

After falling outside the top 20 at the Players Championship and the Arnold Palmer Invitational, the four-time major champion appears to have regained his form and is the favorite to win this weekend’s Cadillac Championship, with Matt Fitzpatrick and McIlroy opting to sit out.

Scheffler is expected to take time off next week to prepare for the PGA Championship, which will be broadcast live on Sky Sports from May 11-17. But all eyes will be on Scheffler to see if he can win the U.S. Open at Sinek Hills in a month’s time and clinch a career Grand Slam.

Jamie will appear on the Sky Sports Golf Podcast with David Howell and actor Jamie Dornan to discuss Scotty Scheffler’s challenging performance in The Players.

When asked if he thought about Grand Slams in his lifetime, Scheffler replied, “I would be happy if I could win the US Open. It’s my favorite tournament.”

“I love my country, and I would be happy to win the National Open. And I’ve had some success in that tournament before, and I think it suits my game style. I’m excited to go to Sinekook this year and want to accomplish that.”

“Growing up, I think you always have dreams and hopes. I dreamed of playing golf on the PGA Tour. I dreamed of having a chance to win major championships, The Players Championship, and tournaments here.”

He added, “I can make my dreams come true by playing and competing in tournaments here, and the actual competition is one of my favorite things in the world.”

“Playing competitive golf on the PGA Tour is a lot of fun. I wish I could, I wish I could play my best every week. But that’s why I said you need to build some pacing into your schedule and things like that. To be at your best, you have to physically be able to do it every week.”

Who will win the Cadillac Championship? Watch all four rounds of the PGA Tour Signature Event live on Sky Sports. Coverage of the opening match will begin at 4pm on Thursday on Sky Sports Golf. Get and stream Sky Sports without a contract.
