Manchester City have won their first Women’s Super League title in 10 years.

Arsenal’s draw with Brighton on Wednesday night means City will no longer be top of the WSL heading into the final game of the season against West Ham on Saturday 16 May.

It is City’s first title since 2016 and marks the end of Chelsea’s WSL dominance. The Blues have been champions for the past six seasons, winning eight titles (including the 2017 Spring Series) since City last won the title.

City’s victory was made all the more impressive by the fact that it came in Andrii Jegratz’s first season since replacing Gareth Taylor.

Jegratz still has a chance of leading City to a domestic double, with City facing Chelsea in the FA Cup semi-final on Sunday.

After winning the title, Jegratz said: “Helping this team win a WSL title is something I will never forget. These girls rose to every challenge head-on and were a real pleasure to coach this season.”

“Through good times and bad, they have always found a way to come together and win, as all great champions do.

“This would not have been possible without the incredible effort, belief, passion and dedication of my colleagues, players and fans. They are all a credit to the club and to themselves and deserve to celebrate this great moment.”

“But this is not the end of the road. We still have a lot to compete for this season and the years to come. I’m excited about what the future holds for this great group of players and this great club.”

A look back at Manchester City’s head coach, Andrii Jegratz’s pre-match speech. It inspired some of the new WSL Champion’s key goals this season.

Analysis by Laura Hunter of Sky Sports:

This Manchester City team is a class above. From their fearless football to their relentless culture driven by an unflinching Andrii Žeglarz, City have outperformed and beaten every other team in this title. No challenger has been able to match them this season.

Winning titles is built on moments and City have produced many memorable moments. Most impressively, they very emphatically saw off their direct rivals. The 3-2 victory over Arsenal in October, the 5-1 thrashing of Chelsea in February and the 3-0 derby win over Manchester United in March all stand out as important results.

More than that, it was a result that proved their worth. Citi doesn’t rely on others to do its dirty work. They are a force. The team is the perfect balance of leadership, horsepower, and world-class talent. They have enough depth to dominate for years to come.

Jegratz becomes the second manager in WSL history to win the top flight in his debut season. His personality and humility were the keys to his success. It is not surprising that he has already shown what more he can achieve with this group. Expectations must be high. The possibilities are literally endless.
