Bayern Munich have begun talks with Newcastle over a possible summer move for Anthony Gordon.
Newcastle will likely listen to offers this summer as the England winger wants to explore his options.
The Magpies and Bayern have a good relationship, and the 25-year-old has been officially approached by the German champions, who have been eyeing him since the beginning of the year.
Gordon’s representatives have also been pictured in Barcelona in recent days, but there has been no direct contact between Newcastle and Barca yet.
Gordon has four years left on his contract at St James’ Park and is the club’s top scorer with 18 goals this season.
What Howe said about Gordon’s future
Sky Sports News reported in April that Gordon and his Newcastle team-mates Sandro Tonali and Tino Libramento could leave St James’ Park in the summer following interest from clubs in England and Europe.
Gordon, who joined the club for £45m in January 2023, is thought to have fans at Bayern as well as Arsenal. There was also an attempt by Liverpool to sign the former Evertonian in 2024, but nothing materialized.
Asked what the future holds for Gordon before Newcastle’s 2-1 home defeat to Bournemouth, Howe was tight-lipped, but reaffirmed he only wants players who will give 100 per cent to the club.
“I always discuss things with the players. I don’t necessarily discuss transfer speculation unless I feel it’s at the necessary stage,” Howe said.
“After talking to Sandro (Tonali), the biggest thing I’m looking for is a commitment to training, because if you see that the players will perform. I think it’s the same for Anthony and all the players.”
“One thing I don’t want to do is play players who I don’t feel are giving 100 per cent to the club and its future.
“I’m not talking about Anthony there, I’m talking overall.”
Analysis: The real possibility of Gordon leaving
Keith Downey, North East correspondent for Sky Sports News:
“Having been at Newcastle for over three seasons, there is a good chance that Gordon will leave this summer. The winger has developed into a regular for England since working under Eddie Howe and the prospect of no Champions League football would not be positive for Newcastle to keep him beyond the summer.”
“However, Newcastle paid the highest transfer fee in Premier League history when they sold Alexander Isak to Liverpool last summer, and if clubs make formal approaches to sign Gordon, they will likely ask for huge sums again.
“How much is a huge transfer fee? It’s probably double the £40m (plus £5m) Newcastle paid him in 2023. They are in a good negotiating position. He still has four years left on his current contract.”
“He is also the third highest scorer in the Champions League this season, something that has been noticed on the continent.
“I hear Gordon is still conducting himself in a professional manner and keeping his head down for the final six games of the season.
“I think Newcastle fans can accept Gordon moving to Bayern Munich rather than their Premier League rivals.
“Newcastle CEO David Hopkinson recently told reporters that Newcastle may need to sell to buy a large stake this summer, and Gordon is one of the club’s best assets.”
“If Newcastle could raise somewhere in the region of £75m to £80m to sign Gordon, it would give them more freedom in the market and welcome the funds available to Howe (or a new manager).”
Will Gordon become another Premier League jewel in Bayern Munich’s attacking line-up?
Callum Bishop on Sky Sports:
“It may not have been enough to reach the Champions League final, but the semi-final first leg against PSG underlined how powerful Bayern Munich’s attack is.
“The influence of the Premier League has left its mark on Bayern’s entire attack, with the front three already consisting of Harry Kane, Michael Olise and Luis Diaz. And it’s also had a positive impact on Vincent Kompany, considering he has scored more than 100 goals in all competitions this season.”
“Adding Gordon to the mix gives us another flexible option who is not as prolific but still young enough to develop. He may be more natural on the left flank, but manager Eddie Howe was reluctant to use Nick Waltemaid or Ioan Wissa as a number nine, so he turned to Gordon as a central striker.”
“And despite all the criticism of the Bundesliga’s competitiveness, the statistics suggest that Kane, Dias and Oliseh have improved by being in the Bundesliga, with the latter in particular finding himself in the Ballon d’Or conversation with his development.”
“It’s an attractive opportunity for Gordon. Not only is he almost guaranteed to qualify for the Champions League every year, but he has shown this season that he can be a big player there.”
