Scottish rugby great Scott Hastings has died at the age of 61.
The British Irish Lions center won 65 caps in an 11-year Test career that began in 1986 and was part of the most recent Scotland team to win a Grand Slam in 1990.
A statement released by his son Corey and daughter Kellyanne revealed that he died from complications related to cancer treatment.
Hastings, fellow Scotland international and younger brother of Great Britain and Ireland Lion Gavin, announced in 2022 that he had been diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
“We are sad to announce that Scott passed away peacefully on the morning of Sunday, May 17th, surrounded by his family,” the statement said.
“This day also marks the birthday of his late wife Jenny, and words speak louder than words that he is safe and with his beloved Jenny.
“Scott was being treated for cancer, but due to complications his condition rapidly deteriorated. Despite all the efforts of the wonderful team at Western General ICU, he passed away peacefully and without pain.
“At this time, the family asks that everyone be given space to process and manage their energies and that their privacy be respected.
“Additional information will be shared in due course to celebrate Scott’s remarkable life.”
