The U.S. Secret Service said its agents shot and killed a man who tried to breach a secure perimeter at President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida.

Anthony Guglielmi, director of communications for the Secret Service, said the man appeared to be in his 20s and armed with a shotgun and a fuel can. He was shot at around 1:30 a.m. Sunday (6:30 GMT).

President Trump was in Washington, D.C., not Mar-a-Lago, when the incident occurred. No other persons under Secret Service protection were present, the agency said.

Secret Service agents and Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office deputies confronted an armed individual, whose identity has not yet been released, as he approached Mar-a-Lago’s north gate, Guglielmi said. The individual was shot by law enforcement officers and later pronounced dead.

In comments quoted by The Associated Press, Guglielmi said the suspect was from North Carolina and had been reported missing by his family several days earlier. He added that investigators believe he left the state heading south and picked up a shotgun along the way.

“This incident, including the individuals’ backgrounds, actions, underlying motives, and use of force, remains under investigation by the FBI, U.S. Secret Service, and the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office,” Guglielmi said in a statement.

President Trump has faced several assassination plots and attempts in recent years.

Earlier this month, Ryan Routh, 59, was sentenced to life in prison for plotting to assassinate the president at a Florida golf course in September 2024.

Routh’s plan to attack Trump comes two months after 20-year-old Matthew Crooks fired several shots, one of which grazed Trump’s ear, during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

The attack, in which a rally attendee was killed, marked a turning point in President Trump’s return to power.
