US President Donald Trump has renewed his threat to overthrow Cuba’s government, saying the US may take action after the regime completes its war against Iran.

Speaking at the White House on Thursday during a visit with his soccer team, Inter Miami, President Trump thanked Secretary of State Marco Rubio for his “great job” on Cuba, where the administration has tightened sanctions aimed at strangling the island’s economy.

“What’s happening in Cuba is amazing. We want to end this problem (Iran) first,” Trump said. “But it’s only a matter of time.”

President Trump and his allies have frequently threatened Havana and gradually increased economic pressure aimed at overthrowing the country’s communist government.

Following the United States’ abduction of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro in January, President Trump said oil supplies to Cuba, a vital economic lifeline that has long been subject to harsh U.S. sanctions, would be completely cut off.

President Trump has embraced the threat of overwhelming military force to advance his priorities around the world, including in Latin America, where he has previously said Cuba is “ready to collapse” in the near future.

U.S. military strikes in Venezuela, where dozens of people have been killed, and on suspected drug-trafficking ships off the coast of Latin America are considered illegal under international law, but the U.S. president has shown little interest in such restrictions.

President Trump said of U.S. military intervention around the world: “We’ve had tremendous success in a lot of different ways. I built and rebuilt our military in my first term, and to be honest, I’ve used it more than I’d like to use it, but when I used it, I found that it certainly worked.”

“If you look at Venezuela, you look at Midnight Hammer in Iran, which is the setting for what we’re doing now, it was pretty amazing.”
