Former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani has been hospitalized and is in serious but stable condition, his spokesperson announced.

“Mayor Giuliani is a warrior who has faced every challenge in life with unwavering strength, and he is fighting with the same level of strength we are talking about,” Ted Goodman said in a post on X on Sunday.

Giuliani, 81, earned the nickname “America’s Mayor” after leading New York City through the aftermath of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the World Trade Center in Manhattan. However, in recent years, it has experienced failure, including losing a defamation lawsuit in 2023.

Goodman declined to say why Giuliani was sent to the hospital, how long he was in the hospital or what his prognosis was.

The Republican politician coughed Friday as he began his evening online show, “America’s Mayor Live.” He told the talk show audience that his voice was “a little under the weather.”

Mr. Giuliani ran unsuccessfully for president in 2008, served as an advisor to President Donald Trump, and led Trump’s continued bid for office after his defeat in the 2020 presidential election.

Last year, President Trump said he would award Giuliani the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

On Sunday, President Trump praised Giuliani, calling him a “true warrior” and New York City’s best mayor.

“What a tragedy that he was treated so badly by the radical left lunatics and all the Democrats. And he was right about everything!” Trump added.

“They rigged the election, fabricated hundreds of stories, did everything possible to destroy our country, and now look at Rudy. So sad!”

Trump and his allies have lost dozens of lawsuits alleging fraud in the 2020 presidential election, but numerous recounts, reviews and audits of the results have found no sign of significant fraud or error.

Two former Georgia election officials later won a $148 million defamation judgment against Giuliani.

Mr. Giuliani ultimately struck a deal that allowed him to keep his home and various belongings in exchange for unspecified compensation and a promise to stop badmouthing former campaign officials.

Mr. Giuliani was elected mayor of New York in 1993 after serving as one of the nation’s most high-profile federal prosecutors, taking on mobsters and unscrupulous Wall Street traders.

But he has since been disbarred in New York and Washington, DC. Giuliani was facing criminal charges in Arizona related to the 2020 election and other legal matters when President Trump granted him a sweeping pardon in November.
