Three days after the sudden death of Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham, his sister Darin Graham Nordone was sworn into office Tuesday to fill the vacant Senate seat at the suggestion of President Donald Trump.
Announcing the late senator’s sister’s selection on Monday, South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster introduced the new senator as Graham’s “beloved sister” who would “get the job done for him right now.”

Graham is one of the most influential senators in the U.S. Congress, using his South Carolina seat to pursue a consistently hawkish line on foreign policy and staunch support for his former political rival, President Trump.
Mr. Graham, one of the Senate’s strongest supporters of Israel’s genocidal war in Gaza, has repeatedly opposed imposing limits on U.S. military aid and rejected calls for a ceasefire. He also called for a tougher stance on Iran, championed tougher sanctions, supported military action against Tehran’s nuclear program and warned that the United States should be prepared to use force to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
After he died, unmarried and childless, his position was now taken by his sister Darling, who had previously been active in local government in South Carolina but had never held elected office.
So who is Darling Graham Nordon, how important is this, and is political power in the United States often inherited? Here’s what we know.
Who is Darling Graham Nordon?
She is Lindsey Graham’s sister.
Graham and his sister lost their parents within 15 months of each other.
At the time, Graham was 22 years old and his sister was 13. She went to live with a relative, but the two remained close as Ms. Graham studied law and later served in the Air Force.
Years later, Mr. Graham legally adopted his sister, which he said would ensure her eligibility for military benefits in the event of his death and make her eligible to serve as first lady if elected president.
Mr. Darling Graham Nordone has never held elected office. Neither he nor Gov. Henry McMaster have said whether he intends to serve a full six-year term in the Senate or only as an interim member until January 2027.
“I am committed to working hard in the coming months to support the President and continue my brother’s efforts on behalf of the people of South Carolina and the United States,” she said in brief remarks announcing her appointment Monday. “I think this is what Lindsay would want and this is how I will honor him.”

What powers has Darling Graham Nordon inherited?
Darling Graham Nordone inherited her brother’s Senate seat, but she does not automatically inherit his influence.
As a senator, she will be able to vote on legislation, approve presidential appointments, influence foreign policy, and help shape U.S. spending priorities.
But her brother’s committee positions, seniority, and political networks, built through decades of negotiations and deals in the Senate’s corridors of power, will not be transferred to her.
Republican leaders will decide on her committee assignments, and she will establish herself in Washington.
Is political power in the United States often inherited?
It happens more than you think.
The practice of relatives filling the seats of deceased members of Congress has a long history in American politics, and relatives are often appointed to fill out the remaining terms of office.
According to U.S. House of Representatives statistics, as of 2025, 45 widows will directly succeed their late husbands in Congress, including 38 in the House and eight in the Senate.
Supporters of such appointments point to a long tradition in American politics. Historically known as “widow succession,” the practice allowed governors to appoint the spouses of legislators who died while in office to serve as their temporary guardians until a special election was held. The system also provided an early path for women to enter parliament and contributed to the expansion of women’s representation in the 20th century.
In modern Washington, inherited seats have often served as a bridge between a family’s influential era and the next, just as the powerful Kennedy family has maintained its influence over the past several decades.
Was there any backlash?
Some.
Elected officials have not yet commented on Graham Nordone’s appointment, and the details of her desire to run in the midterm elections remain unclear. But social media users in the United States have reacted angrily to what appears to be an electoral transfer of power.
Journalists such as Ben Binday of the Washington Post also questioned Graham Nordone’s lack of political experience, commenting that nothing was known about her positions on important issues such as abortion, foreign policy, and health care.
