Biggs overwhelmingly defeated David Schweikert and will face Democratic Gov. Katie Hobbs in November.

Congressman Andy Biggs, a staunch ally of President Donald Trump, has won the Republican nomination for Arizona’s most competitive gubernatorial race in November.

Biggs, who overwhelmingly defeated fellow U.S. Rep. David Schweikert in Tuesday’s primary election, will face Democratic Gov. Katie Hobbs in what could be one of the closest gubernatorial races of the midterm elections.

Arizona used to be a Republican-dominated state, but the state has swung back and forth between Republicans and Democrats in recent elections.

Former Democratic President Joe Biden won the state in 2020, and Trump won it back in the 2024 election.

Democrats currently hold both Arizona’s Senate seats and the top three seats in the state Assembly.

The Republican primary will be the stage for key legislative races in battleground states as Democrats seek to wrest the majority in the U.S. Congress from Republicans.

By choosing Biggs, a former leader of the conservative House Freedom Caucus who backed Trump’s failed attempt to prevent him from certifying his defeat in the 2020 presidential election, Republican voters risk nominating another conservative who will excite the party’s base, but who will exclude independents and fail to win in November.

Still, Biggs celebrated the win Tuesday night with a small group of supporters.

“Let’s make this the year we turn Arizona red again,” he said, referring to the color that indicates Republican wins on the U.S. electoral map.

After his victory speech, Biggs rejected Schweikert’s claim that he would become the new Republican that voters deemed too extreme.

“I’m a conservative, a principled conservative, but I work with people who don’t necessarily agree with me on every issue,” Biggs told reporters after the speech.

At the same time, Democrats were deadlocked in a close primary in Arizona, with former state Rep. Amish Shah leading over party favorite Marlene Galan-Woods.
