The war funding bill against Iran and several of President Trump’s priorities were passed almost along party lines and face uncertainty in the Senate.

U.S. House Republicans narrowly passed a massive $1.15 billion military spending package, despite Democratic lawmakers’ concerns about the high price tag and increased military-technical cooperation with Israel.

The bill passed the House on Wednesday by a 216-212 vote along mostly party lines, with six Democrats voting yes and seven Republicans voting no.

“Today’s final vote total for the NDAA tragically merges our military technology and supply chain with Israel’s,” Republican Congressman Thomas Massey, who has clashed with the White House and been a vocal critic of the war on Iran, said in a social media post in response to the vote.

“Section 219 is a betrayal of our sovereignty, so let’s hope this version is defeated in the Senate.”

The 2027 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) reflects President Donald Trump’s call for a significant increase in the nation’s already unparalleled military budget, increasing spending to $1.5 trillion from $900 billion last year.

President Trump said the increase was necessary as the United States fights the widely unpopular war against Iran that the United States and Israel launched in late February.

The 2027 NDAA has attracted attention as a measure to expand military-technical cooperation with Israel, despite growing support among voters for ending military aid to Israel.

The bill now faces an uncertain future in the Senate, where Democrats are likely to object to the high cost as the White House seeks to cut access to social programs. Senate Democrats blocked debate on the NDAA in a vote last week, with Democratic Minority Leader Chuck Schumer calling it a “permission vote” for the administration to go to war with Iran.

The NDAA is typically considered a “must pass” bill, but this year it also includes other controversial measures, such as aid to Ukraine. The package also includes the president’s key priority, the SAVE America Act, which would impose new restrictions on voting to combat what Trump has falsely portrayed as widespread fraud.
