US President Donald Trump announced what he called an “energy ceasefire” between Ukraine and Russia after mutual attacks on energy infrastructure put pressure on global energy prices.
“Effective immediately, an energy ceasefire in the war between Russia and Ukraine is in effect. Both parties have agreed,” President Trump posted on social media on Sunday. “Please don’t destroy it! Thank you for your consideration in this matter. President Donald J. Trump.”

Amid escalating Russian attacks on Ukraine, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy on Sunday pushed for a full ceasefire and said he would hold elections if Russian President Vladimir Putin agrees to a 60-day ceasefire.
“Tell President Putin: Give us two months, 60 days for a complete ceasefire, and we will hold elections,” President Zelensky said on Sunday, responding to Trump’s recent criticism.
“You better stop.”
President Trump on Saturday condemned the Ukrainian president for attacking a Russian refinery, a day after temporarily lifting sanctions on Russian fuel that the United States originally imposed to curb Russia’s war effort in Ukraine.
President Trump told reporters at the White House: “It’s better not to do so.” “I think it’s time for Ukraine to elect a new president,” he added.
Earlier on Saturday, President Zelensky said the announcement of the diesel deal between President Trump and President Putin had encouraged Russia. Kiev instead urged Washington to pressure Russia into serious negotiations to end the four-and-a-half year war.
“Russia today expressed its gratitude for dropping five glide bombs on residential buildings in Zaporizhzhia and for lifting sanctions on diesel exports,” President Zelenskiy said.
“What happened last night was further confirmation that the Russians perceive any easing of pressure as a signal that they can probably continue fighting, maybe continue dropping bombs on cities. They need another signal.”

The southern Ukrainian city of Zaporizhia is a regular target of Russian shelling, and attacks have intensified in the past few months.
A six-year-old girl was also killed in an attack in Zaporizhia on Saturday that left part of her apartment building in rubble. After rescuers pulled her from the wreckage, her grandfather Anatoly Chumny stood sobbing over her body, which lay on the ground in a white bag.
In response to President Trump’s proposal for a new leader, President Zelensky said it was “up to the Ukrainian people” to choose a leader, and pointed out that President Putin also wants to change the person leading Ukraine.
Earlier on Sunday, President Zelensky said Ukraine was ready to halt attacks on Russian oil refineries if Russia ceased its own attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.
