Expected votes: AP’s estimated percentage of the total expected votes counted so far.
Data source: AP
Control of Congress in the second half of President Donald Trump’s term. All 435 House seats and 35 of the 100 Senate seats are up for grabs, including special elections in Florida and Ohio to fill seats vacated by Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President J.D. Vance.
Voters in 36 states also elect governors, state legislators, and local officials.
What will it take for the Democratic Party to take over?
Republicans hold majorities in both chambers. Democrats need to win three seats in the House and four seats in the Senate.
Vice President J.D. Vance can cast a tie vote, giving Republicans control in a 50-50 Senate.
What issues are most important to voters?
Rising gas prices, housing costs, and medical insurance are putting pressure on household budgets, and the cost of living is top of voters’ concerns. The U.S.-Israel war against Iran, the growth of AI and data centers, as well as reproductive rights, immigration, and the state of American democracy are also on the ballot.
How many Americans are registered to vote?
About 210 million people, or nearly eight in 10 U.S. residents, are over the age of 18, according to USAFacts. California has the highest number of registered voters (23.2 million), followed by Texas (17.4 million) and Florida (13.6 million). Wyoming has the lowest number of people at 278,468.
How will different groups vote?
A Pew Research Center survey conducted from September 28 to October 4 found that 44% of registered voters supported the Democratic candidate in the district, while 36% supported the Republican. Men are evenly split at 42% each, while women support the Democratic Party 45% to 31%.
How many people vote in midterm elections?
That’s less than when he was president. Since 1944, the average turnout in midterm elections has been about 42 percent, while the average turnout in presidential elections has been 58 percent. Voter turnout in 2022 was 46.1%.
What happens if Republicans lose the House?
House Democrats could block the Republican bill, investigate the Trump administration through committees, and impeach the president if necessary. It would also increase its influence over government funds, increasing the likelihood of further shutdowns.
What happens if Republicans lose the Senate?
Senate Democrats could block the bill and veto presidential nominees, including lifetime judges. If the House impeaches the president, the Senate will also hold a trial. A two-thirds majority is required for dismissal.
Will winning both chambers give Democrats full control?
No, Trump remains president and can veto the bill, but a two-thirds vote in each chamber is required to override the veto. Most bills also require 60 votes in the Senate to end debate.
When will I know the results?
Results will begin after initial voting closes on November 3rd at 6pm ET (11pm GMT), but close races may take several days. The final count could take days or weeks, as mail-in and provisional ballots are counted. Georgia’s Senate race, which does not have a majority winner, will go to a runoff on December 1st.
The initial lead may change as later ballots are counted, but that in itself is not a sign of fraud.
