Elon Musk’s xAI announced late Wednesday that Grok will no longer be able to create sexual images of real people on X based on user prompts, following widespread backlash from domestic and international politicians.

“We have taken technical steps to prevent Grok accounts from editing images of real people in revealing clothing, such as bikinis,” the X safety account said in a social media post. “This restriction applies to all users, including paid subscribers.”

The announcement came hours after California Attorney General Rob Bonta announced that he was investigating xAI for apparently “the large-scale production of deepfakes of intimate intimate images without consent.”

The study had previously been published by India, Malaysia, Indonesia, Ireland, the United Kingdom, France, Australia, and the European Commission. In the US, three Democratic senators have called on Apple and Google to remove the X and Grok apps from their app stores until the companies make changes to prevent the easy creation of non-consensual and explicit images.

Musk’s company also said in the post that image creation and editing through Grok on X is only available to paid subscribers.
