Amazon CEO Andy Jassy speaks with CNBC at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, January 20, 2026.

Amazon has agreed to invest up to $25 billion in Anthropic, on top of the $8 billion it has poured into artificial intelligence startups in recent years, as part of an expanded agreement to build out its AI infrastructure.

In an announcement Monday, Anthropic said it is committed to spending more than $100 billion over the next 10 years on Amazon Web Services technology, including current and future generations of Amazon’s custom AI chip, Trainium. Anthropic said it has set aside up to 5 gigawatts of capacity for training and deployment of Claude AI models.

“Anthropic’s commitment to running language models at scale on AWS Trainium over the next 10 years reflects the progress we’ve made together in custom silicon as we continue to deliver the technology and infrastructure our customers need to build with generative AI,” Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said in a statement.

Amazon’s investment currently includes $5 billion in Anthropic, with up to $20 billion tied to “certain commercial milestones” in the future, according to the release. The initial investment puts Anthropic’s latest valuation at $380 billion.

Anthropic said in a release that it will bring nearly 1 gigawatt of combined Trainium2 and Trainium3 capacity online by the end of the year.

As major hyperscalers race to build out AI capabilities as quickly as possible, Amazon announced in February that it expects to spend about $200 billion in capital spending this year, primarily on AI infrastructure.

Amazon’s investment comes just two months after the e-commerce giant agreed to invest up to $50 billion in Anthropic’s biggest rival, OpenAI. Two AI companies are racing to persuade investors to strengthen their positions ahead of IPOs that could happen as early as this year. OpenAI executives have criticized Anthropic in recent months for making a “strategic mistake in not acquiring enough compute.”

Anthropic said Monday that enterprise and developer demand for Claude, as well as a “rapid increase” in consumer usage, has put an “inevitable strain” on its infrastructure, impacting reliability and performance. The company said the new deal with Amazon will rapidly expand its available production capacity.

“Our users are telling us that Claude is becoming increasingly essential to the way they work, and we need to build the infrastructure to keep up with rapidly growing demand,” Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei said in a statement. “Working with Amazon allows us to continue to advance our AI research while delivering Claude to our customers, including over 100,000 builds on AWS.”

Anthropic was founded in 2021 by a group of researchers and executives who defected from OpenAI. The company is best known for its Claude AI model family, which has seen early success selling to enterprises. Annual revenue exceeded $30 billion.

Although Anthropic named AWS its primary cloud provider in 2023 and primary training partner in 2024, the company also has agreements with competing providers, including: microsoft and google.

In November, Microsoft announced it had agreed to invest up to $5 billion in Anthropic, and Anthropic had committed to buying $30 billion in Azure computing power. Earlier this month, Anthropic expanded its partnership with Google. broadcom “Several gigawatts” of capacity.
