The “addictive” design of Instagram and Facebook is Meta It violates the European Union’s digital law, the EU concluded in a preliminary report on Friday.
The European Commission said the tech giant breached EU digital services law by failing to adequately consider risks associated with design features that could affect the physical health of users, including minors and vulnerable adults.
These features include infinite scrolling, autoplay, push notifications, and a highly personalized recommendation system.
If the commission’s findings are confirmed, Meta faces a fine of up to 6% of its annual gross sales.
A Meta spokesperson said: “We disagree with these preliminary findings. They do not accurately take into account the important steps we have taken to protect our teens.”
Since the investigation began, Meta says it has introduced teen accounts that “automatically protect teens and give parents control” by blocking nighttime access and allowing them to limit screen time to 15 minutes a day.
“We share the European Commission’s commitment to providing safe and positive online experiences for teenagers and will continue to engage constructively with them.”
