Frontier announced Tuesday that its first Airbus aircraft equipped with Starlink Internet is scheduled to enter service in early 2027. CNBC reported in 2022 that Frontier was in talks with Starlink to add its first in-flight Wi-Fi service.

A Frontier spokesperson declined to say whether flyers can use the service for free. Major airlines have signed agreements with Starlink to provide free Wi-Fi to loyalty program members.

Frontier was one of the last companies to add Wi-Fi in the United States. Former CEO Barry Biffle previously said the company was reluctant to add weight to its aircraft with equipment needed for service.

Starlink, part of Elon Musk space xhas agreements with more than 40 carriers around the world, including: united airlines and american airlinesAirlines are enhancing their in-flight services and customers are coming to expect home-quality internet in the air. The airline declined to disclose the terms of the deal. SpaceX had no immediate comment.

The airlines in the latest Starlink deal (Frontier, Mexico’s Volaris, European low-cost airline Wiz, Chile’s JetSmart and the Philippines’ Cebu Pacific) all share an investor in Indigo Partners, the private equity firm led by serial airline investor Bill Franke.

Low-cost airlines are under pressure to move into the luxury market as larger competitors grow front-of-cabin revenue and upend discounters’ no-frills seating and amenities model that once made them profitable. Frontier plans to debut first class seats next year.
