Manas said on Tuesday it would “soon resume operations as an independent company” after Chinese regulators requested it in April. Meta Unwinding $2 billion acquisition of artificial intelligence startup.
Last December, Meta announced that it had acquired Manus, a developer of general-purpose AI agents. The company was founded in China in 2022 and later moved to Singapore. The deal quickly drew scrutiny from Beijing and Washington, where Chinese authorities are investigating whether it violates the country’s rules on foreign investment.
The country’s National Development and Reform Commission issued a decision in April, directing the parties to withdraw from the deal. This began a complex unwinding process. The Chinese government has since tightened technology export controls on cross-border transactions as the U.S. and China compete for talent, hardware and data as the AI race heats up.
Manas said Tuesday that some users will need to back up data generated after Dec. 29, 2025, when the meta deal was announced.
“This is part of our separation from Meta, and we are required to take this step to comply with regulatory requirements in certain regions of the world,” the company wrote.
Meta planned to incorporate Manus’ technology into its consumer and business products. The deal comes amid a series of aggressive AI expansions by Meta. Meta is working to build a subscription business around this technology and compete against competitors. google and top AI labs human and OpenAI.
Last week, Meta released its first coding agent and announced its latest effort to generate revenue from AI.
