alphabetWaymo announced Tuesday that it will roll out robotaxi rides in Germany in 2027, making it its third international market and the first in the European Union.

Waymo plans to begin “staged” testing in Munich over the next few weeks, with plans to open to the public by the end of next year, the company said in a blog post. The purpose of the test is to build high-resolution road maps, train autonomous driving experts and adapt the software to the city’s “unique driving conditions.”

“Munich is a world-class hub for mobility and engineering, and becoming part of the city is an important milestone in our global expansion,” Waymo co-CEO Tekedra Mawakana said in a post.

To date, Waymo has established itself as a dominant player in the robotaxis industry in the United States, although the industry is still in its infancy. The company currently operates in 11 U.S. cities and is working on expanding to 19 other cities, according to its website. Last month, Waymo announced its expansion to San Diego, California. Las Vegas, Nevada. Tampa, Florida. and Denver, Colorado.

Munich will be the company’s third international city after London and Tokyo. Waymo is currently testing robotaxis in both markets.

As of March, Waymo had tracked approximately 221 million fully autonomous miles.
