Uber announced Wednesday plans to cut 10% of its workforce in an effort to consolidate management and reduce costs.

“The changes we’re making today are designed to do two things: make Uber simpler and faster, and increase our ability to invest in our future,” CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said in an email to employees. This includes previous plans to spend more than $10 billion on self-driving cars over the next few years.

Shares of the ride-hailing company rose nearly 2% in morning trading.

Uber declined to comment on the number of job cuts. The company had about 34,000 employees at the end of 2025, according to its annual report.

Uber is the latest company to flatten its management structure to speed up decision-making and improve efficiency. The tech giants are google Similar moves have been made in recent years.

Khosrowshahi does not attribute the layoffs to artificial intelligence, which has been responsible for the recent wave of layoffs in the technology sector.

Changes include cutting small teams of one or two people reporting by almost half and cutting the number of employees seven steps away from the CEO by 20%. Khosrowshahi said Uber has outgrown many of these organizations at its current size.

Uber is also consolidating more teams and concentrating more employees in locations such as New York and San Francisco. Khosrowshahi said the company plans to allow about 1% of employees to continue working remotely.

“A leaner organization means clearer ownership, faster decision-making, and more time spent building rather than adjusting,” he said.
