Samsung Electronics on Thursday reported preliminary operating profit for the third quarter of 107.4 trillion won ($80.2 billion), exceeding 100 trillion won for the first time in its history as surging demand for artificial intelligence boosts its chip business.
Operating income for the quarter increased 782% year over year. Sales were approximately 195 trillion won, an increase of nearly 127% compared to the same period last year.
Samsung, the world’s largest memory chip maker, is benefiting from a surge in demand for memory used in AI infrastructure. In the second quarter, the company recorded record sales of 171.5 trillion won and operating profit of 89.5 trillion won, driven by its memory business.
The company is also strengthening investments and partnerships related to AI. In September, Samsung announced a strategic partnership with French artificial intelligence startup Mistral AI, with plans to implement the startup’s AI model across its semiconductor business.
Samsung is expected to release its full third-quarter financial results, including a breakdown by business unit, at the end of this month.
