Grocery store hacks for eating well from a certified nutrition coach

One of the keys to eating healthier is making the most of your trips to the grocery store. Then consider this popular grocery store hack from nutrition and health coach Hunter Stoller.

“I try to shop around the grocery store,” said Stoller, who calls herself “Health with Hunter” on social media. “That’s where most of the produce, fruits, vegetables and proteins are.”

Stoller said she still gets some items like nut butters and healthy cereals from the inside aisle, where shelf-stable foods are usually kept. But that’s only after you’ve first shopped along the perimeter of the store.

“You’ll get the freshest food here,” nutrition educator Katie Johnson said in a video about shopping at Mayo Clinic Health System’s Perimeter.

“Fresh foods are generally healthier than ready-to-eat foods in the inner aisles. Because foods in the outer periphery are fresher, eating these foods can help you better control fat and salt in your diet.”

The American Heart Association recommends stocking up on seasonal produce and healthy items on sale if you try this hack.

Longevity expert Dr. Simon Feldhaus told CNBC Make It last month that he only eats fruits and vegetables that are in season for optimal health results.

We found that the longer a produce is harvested and before people consume it, the greater the risk that its nutritional content will decline, registered dietitian Wendy Lopez told the American Heart Association in 2024.

For a complete list of seasonal produce year-round, check out the USDA’s SNAP-Ed Connection Seasonal Produce Guide.
