President Donald Trump announced Thursday that he will nominate Dr. Nicole Safia to be the next U.S. Surgeon General, after rescinding his previous nomination of Dr. Casey Means, whose confirmation process had been stalled in the Senate for months.
Saphier is a breast radiologist and former Fox News contributor. She is the Director of Breast Imaging at Monmouth Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and the author of several books. That includes a book criticizing the U.S. response to the COVID-19 pandemic, arguing that political agendas often overshadow scientific guidance.
“Nicole is a star physician who has spent her career guiding women facing breast cancer through diagnosis and treatment and tirelessly advocating for increased early detection and prevention of cancer, as well as working with men and women on the diagnosis and treatment of all other forms of cancer,” President Trump said in a Thursday post on Truth Social.
“She is also an incredible communicator who makes complex health issues understandable for all Americans,” Trump continued.
Ms. Means was nominated on the recommendation of her close ally, Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Her nomination had been stalled in the Senate for more than two months over concerns about her controversial positions on vaccines, birth control, pesticides and psychedelics.
Her brother, Callie Means, is a senior White House adviser.
President Trump on Thursday also accused Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-Louisiana) of standing in the way of Means’ bid for the nomination.
“I nominated Casey, a strong MAHA warrior, at the recommendation of Secretary Kennedy, who understands the MAHA movement better than anyone except perhaps me!” President Trump wrote, “Thank you, Casey, for your service to our country!”
Correction: This article has been updated to correct that Nicole Safier is no longer a Fox News contributor. A previous version incorrectly listed her current role.
