Detroit – general motors Automakers are laying off hundreds of salaried employees in their IT departments as they reassess employee needs and cut costs, CNBC has learned.
The global layoffs will begin Monday and affect about 500 to 600 employees, primarily in Austin, Texas, and Warren, Michigan, said a person familiar with the plans, who was not authorized to discuss the cuts publicly.
GM confirmed the layoffs, which were first reported by Bloomberg News, but did not provide details on specific measures.
“GM is transforming its information technology organization to better position the company for the future. As part of that, we have made the difficult decision to eliminate some roles globally. We appreciate the contributions of our affected employees and are committed to supporting them through this transition,” the automaker said in an emailed statement.
GM reported that it employed approximately 68,000 salaried workers worldwide at the end of last year, including 47,000 white-collar workers in the United States.
Despite Monday’s layoffs, GM is still hiring employees in its IT department. According to the Detroit automaker’s career website, the company has 82 IT job openings, including jobs in artificial intelligence, motorsports and self-driving cars.
In recent years, GM has regularly reevaluated its salaried workforce based on anticipated needs and skill sets. In October, the company laid off more than 200 computer-aided design (CAD) engineers, citing “business conditions.”
