The United States celebrated its 250th anniversary Saturday with fireworks, a large event on the National Mall and a campaign-style speech from President Donald Trump.
For investors returning from the weekend, the drama is not just on the pitch, but in prediction markets, oil and Wall Street’s heightened risk appetite.
What you need to know today
The 2026 World Cup continues to bring surprises.
The beautiful game was marked by upsets on the field, but it was also fraught with drama off the field, with US President Donald Trump reportedly intervening to reverse suspensions for international players due to red cards.
The red card for American striker Folarin Balogun resulted in an immediate one-match suspension without appeal, but FIFA announced on Sunday that it would allow him to play in the next match, a move not seen in more than 60 years.
Multiple media outlets reported that President Trump called FIFA president Gianni Infantino and asked him to review Balogun’s suspension.
In the minds of the fans, that in itself may be a red card.
Prediction markets, on the other hand, have been riding the football craze, recording huge trading volumes in June. Kalsi’s notional trading volume for the month exceeded $31 billion, an increase of more than 70% from May’s total of $17.9 billion.
The platform has consistently managed more than $1 billion in daily trading volume since the soccer tournament began on June 11th.
Polymarket’s International Event Contract Exchange set a new monthly trading volume record with notional principal trading volume exceeding $10.8 billion in June. This reverses the April and May slides.
While prediction markets are all the rage, the U.S. stock market isn’t far behind, despite some high-profile AI stock turnover. Stock futures are all in positive territory, extending their weekly gains last week before the Fourth of July holiday. However, Asia-Pacific markets traded mixed on Monday.
Outside of the US, the Iran conflict appears to have diminished significantly, with the UK and France agreeing to work with Oman to ensure the Gulf state’s territorial waters are safe for navigation. Oman also borders the Strait of Hormuz.
The move, along with OPEC+’s decision to increase oil production by 188,000 barrels per day, sent oil prices lower on Monday, with U.S. West Texas Intermediate futures down 0.26% to $68.49 and international benchmark Brent crude oil down 0.36% to $71.86.

President Donald Trump celebrated the United States’ 250th anniversary with a campaign-style speech on Saturday, repeating calls for new voting restrictions and warning that “communists” could gain ground in the country, repeating accomplishments he touted as his own.
After a nearly two-hour delay caused by the storm, President Trump appeared on the National Mall in Washington, delivering a speech that mixed broad appeals to patriotism with sharp attacks on perceived ideological threats at home and abroad.
