Detroit — general motors The automaker plans to launch new gasoline-powered Cadillac vehicles next spring as it continues its shift away from all-electric vehicles.
GM CEO Mary Barra said Tuesday that the next generation of Cadillacs will include the company’s CT5 sedan, XT5 midsize SUV and new versions of the discontinued three-row SUV.
Barra said at the company’s second-quarter earnings conference, “We will begin selling the next generation Cadillac ICE (internal combustion engine) vehicle from next spring to 2028.” He said the vehicles will be in addition to Cadillac’s current all-electric crossover and Escalade SUV.
The announcement of new products will further accelerate the decline in GM’s EV business. The automaker had planned for Cadillac to be the exclusive distributor of electric vehicles by the end of this decade. The company also scrapped EV plans for other brands and increased production of gasoline engines, including V8 engines.
GM has recorded $10.9 billion in EV-related expenses since the second half of last year due to the slower-than-expected spread of electric vehicles and changes in U.S. regulations such as relaxing emissions standards and abolishing support for EVs.
Barra reiterated that GM’s plans include “large-scale localization of manufacturing” for the Detroit automaker starting next year, part of which includes expanding production of full-size SUVs at a plant in Michigan that was previously slated to produce EVs.
Full-size SUVs (Escalade, Chevrolet Tahoe, Suburban, GMC Yukon, Yukon XL) are currently produced exclusively at the company’s Arlington Assembly Plant in Texas.
