Thursday’s big stock news: What could move the market

With the Dow Jones Industrial Average down more than 400 points, here’s what CNBC TV producers were watching and what they’re eyeing for next trade. Brian Niccol Appears Live on ‘Squawk Box’ Thursday Morning Niccol, CEO of Starbucks, will join the team at 8 a.m. ET. The stock has risen 30% since he took over, but is down 9.5% from its Aug. 13 high. Past 12 Months SBUX 1Y Mountain Starbucks Freeport McMoRan CEO Kathleen Quirk joins Morgan Brennan on “Closing Bell: Overtime” at 4 p.m. The mining giant has fallen 5% from its high in late August. Big Data Live on Squawk Box Weekly jobless claims and the producer price index, a key measure of inflation, will be released at 8:30 a.m. The Dow Jones consensus forecast calls for initial jobless claims of 205,000. On a monthly basis, the Dow Jones Consensus expects PPI to be 0.4%, while the year-over-year forecast is 5.3%. The “Squawk Box” team (Becky Quick, Joe Kernen, Andrew Ross Sorkin) will have the details and the immediate market reaction. Yield The yield on the US two-year government bond reached its highest level since July 2024, reaching 4.434%. The yield on the 10-year US Treasury note was 4.857%, the highest level since November 2023. The yield on three-month Treasury bills is currently 3.9%. The Fidelity Corporate Bond ETF (FCOR) currently has a dividend yield of 4.74%. The State Street SPDR Bloomberg High Yield Bond ETF (JNK) has a dividend yield of 6.76%. The iShares iBoxx High Yield Corporate Bond ETF (HYG) has a yield of 6%, and the iShares 0-5 Year High Yield Corporate Bond ETF (SHYG) has a yield of 7.05%. US10Y YTD 2026 10-Year US Treasury Yield Mountain Macy’s Morning Report Stocks down 3% in 3 months. Macy’s stock is down 19% from its August 4 high. The stock has fallen 21% in three months, according to an afternoon report from Oracle. Oracle is down 53% from its September 2025 ORCL 3M Mountain Oracle high in the past three months. The HP technology giant just hit a 52-week high. HPQ stock is up about 8% so far in September. Big Dow constituents hit new lows McDonald’s is down 25% from its March 2 high. The stock is currently at a low dating back to July 2024. Nike’s lowest price dates back to June 2014. The stock is down 51% from its October 2 high. Energy stocks hit new highs Brent crude oil topped $100 a barrel on Wednesday. Brent and West Texas Intermediate are now both up more than 20% in a month. ConocoPhillips is at a four-year high. The stock rose 3% in September and is up 45% year-to-date. Marathon Petroleum is up 146% from its 52-week low on New Year’s Eve 2025, putting the stock at an all-time high. Chevron on Wednesday hit its highest price since the Texaco merger. The stock price rose 3.7% in September. Phillips 66 hit its highest price since its 2013 IPO. The stock price has almost doubled in one year. Valero hit an all-time high. The stock rose nearly 5% in two days and is up 8.4% since the start of September.
