The deal, expected to be signed by the United Nations General Assembly this week, would see the United States, Denmark and Greenland strike a deal to deploy a significant military presence in the region while preventing Washington’s adversaries from building their own bases there.
This comes after President Trump has argued for months that Greenland is critical to U.S. national security and threatened to annex the autonomous Danish territory.
President Trump announced the agreement on Friday, saying via Truth Social that the United States “will forever have the full ability to do what is necessary in Greenland to ensure and protect the security of Greenland and the United States.”
President Trump said the deal would come at no cost to the United States, adding that the United States would “immediately begin the process of deploying a large-scale military presence in appropriate areas where Greenland is abundant.”
Key details of the agreement have not yet been made public.
Greenlandic and Danish officials sought to reassure their citizens over the weekend that the deal respects the island’s right to self-determination and the sovereignty of the Kingdom of Denmark.
“We are pleased that we are reaching an agreement that will ensure and strengthen the security of Greenland, the Kingdom of Denmark, the United States and the Western Alliance,” Greenland Prime Minister Jens Frederik Nielsen said in a statement.
“This agreement recognizes Greenland’s interests and our position in international cooperation. This is in the interest of all of us,” he added.
