U.S. Treasury yields edged lower on Monday, following a sharp decline last week, as investors focused on minutes from the latest Federal Reserve meeting.
benchmark 10 year treasury fell more than 1 basis point to 5.255%. 30 year treasury Bonds also fell by 1 basis point to 5.614%. of 2 years treasury Bond yields fell 2 basis points to 4.797%.
One basis point equals 0.01%, and yields and prices move in opposite directions.
Investors have been dogged by bond market declines over the past few weeks, but Friday’s lackluster monthly jobs report helped push yields lower, easing fears of another rate hike.
Traders are currently pricing in a nearly 82% chance that the Fed will leave interest rates unchanged at its next meeting, according to CME Group’s FedWatch tool.
On the economic data front, the Supply Management Association’s Service Activity Report is scheduled to be released on Monday, while investors will be keeping an eye on Wednesday’s minutes of the central bank’s September meeting.
“The high volatility in bond markets makes upcoming U.S. data and Fed communications particularly important,” Deutsche Bank analysts said in a note. “As such, the minutes will be worth watching for how the broader committee frames the current tightening cycle, as well as the discussion on the neutral interest rate, for which expectations were revised upward at the September SEP.”
