Greenhouse CEO talks about AI rules to ask during job interviews

The interviewer asked questions about you as a candidate. Now it’s your turn.

There are the usual suspects: What does success in that role look like? What do you like most about your company’s culture? What traits do all of our top performers have in common?

These days, we should ask another question, says Daniel Chait, CEO of employment platform Greenhouse. Job seekers should ask about expectations and rules for using artificial intelligence both throughout the interview process and on the job, he told CNBC Make It at Forbes’ Future of Work Summit in New York City on October 6.

When it comes to using AI at work, “expectations and rules vary greatly from company to company and from job to job,” Chait says. An April Greenhouse report found that roughly four in five U.S. candidates who have experienced AI evaluation during the hiring process say their employer’s AI policy is vague, rare, or non-existent.

Rules regarding the use of AI may also vary depending on the stage of the interview process.

For example, many recruiters would frown upon candidates using AI to answer questions during screening calls in real time, but if you, like many employers, want your staff to embrace AI, you might encourage candidates to use AI to mimic real-world work and complete take-home assessments.

“Rules are often not published, unknown, and can change quickly,” Chait added. “Don’t make assumptions about where you are or where you are not allowed to use AI.”

There is also the issue of using AI when applying for jobs, well before the interview process.

According to CNBC and SurveyMonkey’s quarterly AI and Work Survey of 1,686 workers conducted in July, about 47% of workers said they had used AI to apply for a job, with one of the most common use cases being resume writing assistance.

When it comes to applying for jobs, Chait warned that using too much AI when building resumes could hurt your chances.

“All resumes end up looking the same,” he says.

ZipRecruiter career expert Sam DeMase previously told CNBC Make It that “AI should never be used to write your entire resume.” Instead, DeMase suggests feeding your job description and resume into an AI tool, asking what skill or experience gaps you have, and jogging your memory to see if you can (honestly) make any relevant additions.

While Chait said AI can be a “great creative tool,” he cautioned against letting it “do the writing” when it comes to creating resumes. Instead, she recommends spending more time on fewer applications, researching companies and roles, putting yourself in the hiring manager’s shoes, and “thinking skeptically” about how your resume will be received. “If you think from your reader’s perspective rather than your own, you may gain some insight.”

After all, the goal of a resume is “to tell your story as best as you can to the right audience,” Chait said.
