coreweaveCredit stress continued to spiral on Thursday amid widespread declines in AI stocks.
CoreWeave, a so-called neo-cloud company, has taken on more than $51 billion in debt and obligations to fund the construction of its AI infrastructure. The company is currently facing a revolt from stock and bond investors amid growing concerns about overspending on AI and debt levels.
Yields on Coreweave bonds continue to rise, with a 9.75% bond due in 2031 now yielding 15.78%. Bond yields move inversely to prices. Meanwhile, the spread on five-year credit default swaps, which provide insurance against default, soared to more than 1,140 basis points (bp) at one point. Last time it was close to 1,038bps, up 16% from the previous week and 164% from a year ago.

Confidence concerns are also spreading to AI stocks. Coreweave stock fell during trading on Thursday, but recovered to close 5.94% higher. The move followed a 15.5% plunge on Wednesday.
Other neocloud stocks were under similar pressure. Nevius It also sank before rising to 1.29%. Airen It ultimately ended the day down less than 1%.
There are also growing concerns about overspending on AI. for example, micron technology and advanced micro device The sale followed a sharp decline in South Korean semiconductor stocks. Micron closed 1.87% higher, while AMD fell 1.5%.
While concerns about AI debt have been steadily rising, investors are suddenly becoming nervous about the underlying financial health of companies that borrow heavily to buy chips, build data centers and rent computing power.
Coreweave’s credit default swaps are one place where the stress can be seen.
A credit default swap is an agreement in which the buyer pays a protection fee if the borrower is unable to repay the debt. Widening spreads on CoreWeave’s CDSs means investors are viewing the debt as riskier.
Evercore ISI Trading Desk said the market is “essentially saying ‘no mass’ to AI debt without operating cash flow support.”
Gavan Nolan, executive director of fixed income pricing at S&P Global Market Intelligence, said spread levels of 1,000 basis points or more are generally a sign of credit concerns.
CoreWeave 5-day performance
CoreWeave has contracts with all the major hyperscalers, so no one questions whether the demand for CoreWeave’s services is genuine, Nolan said. The question is whether or not they will have cash flow in the end.
“Obviously we’re significantly negative in free cash flow at this point, and that cash flow really needs to be achieved to justify all the capital investment that we’re spending,” Nolan said.
“Self-fulfilling prophecy”
CEO Mike Intrater on Wednesday dismissed the market move, according to a memo obtained by CNBC.
“When building a new type of technology company, there will always be periods when the market misunderstands and behaves irrationally,” he wrote. “We are confident that our outstanding balances are sufficient to cover all of our obligations.”
The backlog exceeds $100 billion, approximately two-thirds of which are investment grade companies. microsoft, Meta, IBM and caterpillarDeutsche Bank said in a note on Thursday. The company reiterated its buy rating on the stock on Wednesday, calling the disruption a buying opportunity.
“The problem is that these kinds of concerns could prove to be a self-fulfilling prophecy and risk causing broader problems in other AI-related names,” said Jim Reid, global head of macro and thematic research.
Oracle 5-Year Credit Default Swap Spread
The domino effect may already be occurring. oracleThe five-year CDS spread also rose sharply this week. The lowest point was 282 basis points, an increase of about 10% in one week.
“A downgrade from the BBB rating risks forcing IG-only investors to sell,” Reid said.
