Investors are eagerly anticipating this week’s main event: the Federal Reserve’s interest rate decision on Wednesday. According to the CME FedWatch tool, traders are pricing in a more than 90% chance that policy makers will keep interest rates unchanged at their current target range of 3.75% to 4%.
Analysts at Deutsche Bank said they expected the decision to draw more attention to Chairman Kevin Warsh’s comments, which focused on “how the Fed balances persistently high inflation and solid growth with the recent tightening of financial conditions.”
“The broader message is likely to remain hawkish. Our economists believe that even if the Fed chooses to pause this week, recent inflation data will provide evidence for further tightening over time,” analysts said in a note Monday.
He added that Warsh is expected to make clear that tight financial conditions are not an alternative to raising policy rates.
Investors will also closely monitor the Federal Reserve’s preferred inflation measure, the Personal Consumption Expenditure Index, which will be released on Thursday.
Other economic indicators released this week include ADP employment changes every Tuesday and durable goods orders for September. First unemployment insurance filing every Thursday. Further employment data will be released on Friday.
