Demonstrators clashed with police in France on Saturday as students, trade unions and members of a revived “yellow vest” movement took to the streets as demonstrations over living costs and public services entered a fourth consecutive weekend.

The interior ministry counted 146,000 demonstrators nationwide, including 46,000 in Paris. According to the Youth Union Alliance, the number of participants is 250,000 nationwide, and 75,000 in the Tokyo metropolitan area. At least 360 people have been arrested across the country, AFP news agency reported, citing a ministry tally.

According to AFP, police used tear gas against people throwing projectiles as the main demonstration march in Paris ended at Place de la Nation. According to Le Monde newspaper, demonstrators and police clashed in several cities and trash cans were set on fire.

Le Monde newspaper reported that police separately stopped a banned yellow vest rally in Place de la Concorde and arrested two movement leaders.

The Yellow Vests movement was formed in 2018 to protest increases in fuel taxes and has since expanded into a movement to protest the high cost of living and President Emmanuel Macron’s policies.

Voter turnout was lower than the previous three weekends. The number was also lower than the number of labor union-led demonstrations on November 5, when the Interior Ministry counted 575,000 people nationwide.

The protests began in late September with high school students demanding better conditions, and were later joined by university students and labor unions.

This weekend’s protests came after France’s parliament rejected the revenue portion of the 2027 budget, as the French government struggles to manage public anger while reining in its finances.

The government’s draft bill has now been sent to the House of Lords, where it is due to be debated on November 20th.

Prime Minister Sébastien Lecorne is scheduled to meet with labor and management representatives on Monday to discuss wages and purchasing power.
