Federal authorities raided Minnesota Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar’s Washington, D.C., home Monday morning as part of a criminal fraud investigation into immigration forms filled out by her father, Fox News reported, citing people familiar with the situation.
The Justice Department later confirmed the raid in response to questions from CNBC.
Omar, who was born in Somalia and brought to the United States as a child, has been the target of criticism from President Donald Trump. She became a U.S. citizen in 2000 at the age of 17.
The Homeland Security Investigations Agency, a division of the Department of Homeland Security, conducted the raid, Fox News reported.
“Today, Homeland Security Investigations executed a judicially authorized search warrant secured by the Department of Justice in the Washington, D.C. area,” the Department of Justice said in a statement in response to questions about the raid to CNBC.
“This enforcement action is part of an ongoing federal investigation,” the statement said.
The raid comes less than a month before the November midterm elections. Omar, 44, is seeking re-election to represent Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District.
CNBC made the request to Omar’s office and the Department of Justice.
