Zoran Mamdani made history on Tuesday when he was elected mayor of New York.
Mamdani, a 34-year-old democratic socialist who has focused on working-class issues, is the city’s first Muslim mayor and the first South Asian to hold the office.
“For as long as we can remember, New York workers have been told by the rich and wealthy that the power is not in their hands, picking up boxes on warehouse floors and bruising their fingers,” Mamdani told supporters at an election night event in Brooklyn. “Palms calloused from being delivered at a candle bar. Knuckles scarred by kitchen burns. These are not the hands that should hold power. And yet, for the last 12 months, you have dared to reach for something bigger. Tonight, against all odds, we grabbed it.”
Mamdani’s victory marks a victory for the progressive wing of the Democratic Party amid divisions within the national Democratic Party over how to counter President Donald Trump. Mamdani defeated former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa.
