Google’s AI try-on app Doppl adds shoppable discovery feed

Google announced Monday that it is introducing a shoppable discovery feed to Doppl, an experimental app that uses AI to visualize how different outfits will look on you.

The tech giant says the idea behind the new feed is to surface recommendations so users can discover new items and try them on virtually. Almost everything in the feed is shoppable and linked directly to the seller.

The Discovery Feed includes AI-generated videos of real products and makes outfit suggestions based on your personalized style. Google determines your style by analyzing the settings you share with Doppl and the items you interact with.

The move comes as short-form video feeds, especially on TikTok and Instagram, condition users to scroll through visual feeds and buy what they see. But unlike TikTok or Instagram, where real influencers promote products, Google’s new feed consists entirely of AI-generated content.

While some people may not like an AI-generated feed, Google may be looking at this as a way to display products in a format that people are already familiar with. Additionally, it makes sense for the company to try a new e-commerce strategy, especially as it continues to lose momentum to companies like Amazon and social media platforms.

It’s worth noting that AI-generated videos aren’t new to Doppl. The app creates images of virtual versions of yourself in different outfits, but these still images can be turned into AI-generated videos. The purpose of this is to better understand how the clothes will look in real life.

The new Discovery Feed is rolling out to Doppl on iOS and Android for users 18 and older in the US.

A feed made entirely of AI-generated content may have seemed strange a year ago, but the idea is now gaining traction. For example, in September, OpenAI launched Sora, an AI video-only social media platform. Meta also has a short video feed of AI-generated videos called “Vibes” within the Meta AI app.
