Amazon launches healthcare AI assistant on its website and app

Amazon announced Tuesday that it is expanding access to its healthcare AI assistant to its website and apps. The assistant, called Health AI, was previously only available in the app of One Medical, the healthcare company that Amazon acquired for $3.9 billion in 2023.

Health AI can answer questions, walk you through your health records, manage prescription renewals, and schedule appointments. Amazon says users do not need to be Prime members or One Medical members to use Assistant.

Amazon says Health AI is designed to act as a personalized health assistant that can answer common health questions without accessing personal medical information, but can provide more customized guidance and take actions such as connecting you with a medical professional or treatment.

Of course, there are risks to sharing health information with AI, with researchers warning against doing so and warning that companies are pulling users’ conversations for training purposes.

Amazon said in a press release that it trains “health AI models based on abstracted patterns without directly identifying the information.” For example, if multiple patients ask questions about drug interactions, Amazon says these patterns could be used to improve how Health AI responds to similar questions, while keeping the patients’ names private.

The company also said that all interactions with Health AI take place within a HIPAA-compliant environment, and conversations are protected by “encryption and strict access controls.” However, Amazon did not reveal how exactly the conversations would be encrypted or who would have access to them. TechCrunch has reached out for more information.

When you give Health AI access to your health information, Amazon says it does so through the Health Information Exchange, a national secure system for sharing patient health data.

When you need specialized care, Health AI connects you to One Medical providers. U.S. Prime members with Health AI can receive up to five free direct message care consultations from One Medical providers for more than 30 common conditions, including colds and flu, allergies, acid reflux, conjunctivitis, urinary tract infections, erectile dysfunction, anti-aging skin care, hair loss, and more. Non-Prime members can connect to One Medical providers through Amazon’s pay-per-visit option.

Users can sign up for Health AI on the Amazon Health page. When Amazon expands access, you’ll receive an email when you can access the Assistant.

Once users have access, they must create or sign in to a personal Amazon Health profile. You can then start a conversation by asking Health AI your health questions on Amazon.com or the Amazon app.

Users can ask questions like, “Can you explain my recent cholesterol results and what they mean to me?” “My throat is stuck and hurts, what should I do?”

Amazon’s Health AI expansion comes as popular AI services are rapidly entering the healthcare space. In January, OpenAI released ChatGPT Health, a version of its chatbot tailored to answer health-related questions. A week later, Anthropic announced its healthcare-specific product, Claude for Healthcare.
