Google rolls out new Gemini features to Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Drive

Google announced Tuesday that it is bringing a host of new AI features powered by Gemini to Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Drive. This new feature allows users to quickly generate fully formatted first drafts, slides, and sheets based on information from Gmail, Chat, and Drive.

These tools are designed to make the app more personal and allow users to complete tasks quickly within the platform itself without having to switch to another tool or chatbot.

A new “Create Help” tool in the documentation allows users to describe what they want to create. Gemini will follow your instructions, gathering information from Drive, Gmail, and Chat to generate your first draft. For example, you can ask Gemini to “create a newsletter for your neighborhood association using the January HOA meeting minutes and a list of upcoming events.”

Once you’ve created your first draft, Gemini can help you refine specific sections without having to regenerate the entire document. You can also use the “Writing Help” tool to increase clarity or add details as needed.

Additionally, if multiple people with different voices or tones are working on a draft, you can now use the new Match Style feature to unify your document. Gemini will suggest edits to keep tone and voice consistent throughout the draft.

Docs also has a new Match Format tool that lets you mirror the structure and style of another document. For example, if you find a travel itinerary template you like, Gemini can pull information from your email, including flight confirmations, hotel reservations, car rental reservations, and more, allowing you to enter your own trip details.

Google says Gemini is evolving from a tool for users to a collaborative partner when it comes to spreadsheets. Get relevant data from across Gmail, Chat, and Drive and quickly create fully formatted spreadsheets in a single prompt.

For example, you could ask, “I’m going to organize my upcoming move to Chicago. Please create a room-by-room packing checklist, a utility contact list, and a spreadsheet to track moving company quotes from my inbox.”

For more complex tasks, you can now use the Fill with Gemini tool to fill tables even faster. With this feature, you can instantly generate custom text, categorize and summarize data, and get real-time information from Google searches.

For example, if you manage your college applications, you may have a tracker that tracks all application details. Instead of manually searching for deadlines, tuition fees, and other information for each school, set the details you want in column headers and let Gemini pull relevant information from the web and automatically populate the table.

In Sheets, you can now use context from files, emails, and the web to have Gemini generate fully editable slides in your deck that match your overall theme. If you don’t like the slides, you can ask Gemini to make adjustments such as “matching the colors to the rest of the deck” or “making them more minimalistic.”

Google says that in the future, Slides will allow users to create complete presentations from a single prompt, with relevant context where needed. For example, you could ask a Gemini, “Create five slides for my upcoming trip to Tokyo.”

Google also announced that it is making Drive more of an active collaboration space than just a place to store files. When you search in Drive using natural language, Gemini displays an “AI Overview” at the top of the results, similar to what you see in a Google search. The summary summarizes the most relevant information from the file, citing the source, so you don’t have to open the document to find the information you’re looking for.

The new Ask Gemini in Drive feature lets you ask complex questions in documents, email, calendar, and the web. For example, you can select all your tax-related files and ask, “What should I ask my accountant before filing my taxes this year?” Get detailed answers based on real data.

All new features are rolling out in beta today and are first available to Google AI Ultra and Pro subscribers. Available in English worldwide for Docs, Sheets, and Slides, and in English for Drive in the United States.
