Apple solves bill-splitting woes with new Siri in Camera feature

There’s nothing worse than going out to dinner with a large group of friends and having to pay for your friend’s espresso martini even though you decided not to drink to save money and the group decided to split the bill. You don’t want to go cheap and keep everyone waiting while you recalculate the bill. Now, Apple has a solution for this and announced it at WWDC 2026.

This new feature lets you point your iPhone’s camera at your receipt. You’ll then be able to select each item in Siri mode in the camera app, track who got each item, and send individual Apple Cash payment requests depending on what you actually ordered. Ideally, this feature should make splitting bills a less tedious and lengthy experience.

During Apple’s presentation, Sebastien Marineau-Mes, Apple’s vice president of software, said, “If you’re having a snack with a friend and you hold your iPhone up to the bill, you can select what you ordered and split the tab with Apple Cash.”

This kind of price splitting was already available in apps like SplitWise and Tab, but the reality is that these products never really caught on (at least in my experience, no one ever offered to use either of these tools). Because Apple’s payments functionality exists within the architecture of native apps like iMessage, it feels more natural to send a payment request to someone through an app that doesn’t require them to download anything.

You can also use another similar Siri mide in Camera feature when you go out to dinner. Instead of pointing your camera at your bill, you can use it to see estimated nutritional information for the food you’re eating.
