Apple’s Photos app gets new AI editing features

Apple announced Monday at WWDC 2026 that its Photos app will be adding several new AI features powered by Apple Intelligence.

The new Spatial “Reframe” feature allows users to reframe images using AI. For example, if a user accidentally takes a photo of a sign above someone’s head, if they moved a little to the right the photo would have been more symmetrical, or if they momentarily lose eye contact with the subject, the new reframing tool can help resolve all of these issues.

Users can touch and drag the photo to adjust the perspective as if they were repositioning the camera in the original scene. Users can also preview effects in real time. As you adjust your photo, you’ll notice some blurring around the edges of the original image, which is later filled in by Apple’s generative model.

This feature only generates new content to fill in the gaps where the perspective was affected so that the reframed photo remains consistent with the original scene.

The Expand tool expands the image to give your subject more room or straighten a distorted horizon without cutting out anything important. Users can pinch to zoom out or adjust the crop to add more to the scene.

The app’s popular “cleanup” tool has also been upgraded, allowing users to use generative AI to remove distractions with higher quality, more realistic embeds. This feature allows users to tap, brush, or circle what they want to remove.
