AI-generated “actress” Tilly Norwood struggles on her first press tour. The production company that created it, Particle 6 Group, has published 75 simultaneous interviews with journalists, all of which appear to contain errors. (I wasn’t invited to speak with it, and frankly, I can’t imagine why Particle 6 didn’t want to schedule that meeting.)
In a particularly bizarre interview with Piers Morgan and actor Tom Conti that was recorded and posted online, Norwood appears to malfunction and suddenly start speaking Chinese.
When discussing the film Norwood is promoting, Conti asks if the other actors were also generated by AI. Norwood replied that there are human writers, editors and directors involved.
“You didn’t quite understand the question,” Mr. Conti replied. “Are the other actors on screen with you real actors or are they computer-generated images? Do you know?”
“Oh, yeah, I hear you’re asking about the other actors in ‘Misaligned,'” Norwood begins. “They are all digital twins like me. This is a hybrid work…”
Norwood stopped speaking for a moment, then began speaking in Mandarin for more than 10 seconds.
“Tilly, let me ask you a question,” Morgan says, looking confused. “It’s Piers again… you seem to be speaking Chinese completely randomly for no reason. Why did you do that?” he asks.
“Oh, sorry,” the AI replies. “I think there was a bit of a problem there. I had no intention of starting speaking Chinese or doing any Piers impersonations. Sometimes my wiring gets a little mixed up, you know?”
When an AI bot tries to act like a human, it can be so persuasive that you forget you’re chatting with a computer, which can lead to dangerous consequences. However, Norwood is surprisingly bad at talking to people and is mostly suspected.
Perhaps the Particle 6 group calculated that if people were making fun of Norwood, they would be more likely to talk about Norwood, thinking that no one would take Norwood’s new movie seriously.
