Meta’s latest AI app, Muse, could be the social giant’s next big hit, new data suggests. According to estimates just released by market intelligence provider Apptopia, the Muse app on mobile devices is downloaded more times in its first 12 days on the market than ChatGPT was downloaded in the 12 days after its debut. (This data only compares the US and Canadian markets.)
The company also discovered that Muse had more daily active users than ChatGPT at the time.
Up until now, it has been difficult to accurately compare these two apps as they have pursued different release strategies. When ChatGPT came to mobile, it was available worldwide, but only on iOS. Muse, on the other hand, is available on both Apple’s App Store and Google Play, but only in the US and Canada.
To better align the numbers for comparison, Apptopia looked at only US and Canadian iOS data for both apps for the first 12 days of their respective releases. In this subset of data, Muse has 1.8 million downloads and ChatGPT has 1.3 million downloads.
Overall, Muse recorded a total of 2.8 million installs worldwide in its first 12 days, the company said. Its growth has not stalled yet. As Business Insider reported on Friday, Muse has climbed from its initial No. 2 overall spot on the U.S. App Store shortly after its launch to the current No. 1 spot. This jump puts the app ahead of ChatGPT, the outlet noted. Another company, Appfigures, announced at the time that Muse had surpassed 1 million downloads.

Additionally, Muse’s U.S. daily active user count is higher than ChatGPT’s at the same point post-launch, according to Apptopia data. Comparing just the daily active users of US mobile apps, Muse is higher at 642,000 daily users compared to ChatGPT’s 231,000 at the time.
To be fair, Muse is available for both iOS and Android, while ChatGPT was released only for iOS, but Apptopia narrowed the comparison to iOS only. But Muse still comes out on top here, with 359,000 daily active users on iOS, still ahead of ChatGPT’s numbers at the time.
Apptopia can only provide third-party estimates of app downloads and active users. You cannot directly access Meta’s internal numbers. But even if these numbers are only true from a general “approximate” perspective, they do indicate that Muse could be Meta’s latest top app.
Meta had already perfected his cross-promotion strategy when he launched Instagram Threads. Thanks to strong marketing and integrations with Meta’s biggest apps, including Instagram and Facebook, it currently has over 500 million users. Muse is likely to receive a similar push, given that AI apps can connect to both of these platforms. It also works within WhatsApp, so it could be further enhanced.
Apptopia doesn’t have direct knowledge of Meta’s cross-promotion efforts or advertising, but notes that more than 95% of Muse users are also Facebook users, and 63% are Instagram users.
Meta has not yet shared public numbers related to Muse’s early adoption, although it has been reached for comment.
