In early April, Google released an AI-powered dictation tool that works with local models. Now, the same team is releasing new competing products, including the AI note-taker Granola, which it calls Google AI Edge Foresight.

The Mac app works completely offline and leverages the on-device EmbeddingGemma 2 model with 740 million parameters to capture meeting notes across multiple apps, including in-person meeting notes.

The app is similar to the popular AI note-taking tool Granola, with a split-screen view and the ability to write shorthand notes on one side and AI-generated notes on the other.

Similar to Granola, you can also take manual notes while transcribing the meeting. Additionally, Google’s app lets you view meeting recordings and chat with Gemma 4-powered Assistant to get answers.

Additionally, users can build their knowledge base by uploading documents such as PDFs, Google Docs, Microsoft Office formats, plain text, markdown, and web bookmarks. Using meeting notes and documents, the app can answer questions in real-time as points arise that are relevant to the data in your knowledge base.

The company specified on its FAQ page that Google AI Edge Foresight is optimized for Apple Silicon and can work completely offline. This means you can work with your meeting notes while traveling or anywhere without an internet connection.

While Google’s previous dictation app was experimental and never saw mainstream use, the new meeting notes app may have been created solely to showcase the capabilities of the company’s Gemma series of offline models.

But it’s entirely possible that Google will release a consumer version of its meeting note-taking tool that relies on a cloud model but works with multiple video calling apps via the Gemini app.

Meeting note-taking spaces are competitive and crowded. But that hasn’t stopped companies from developing their own tools. In recent months, dictation company Wispr and scheduling company Calendly have released their own note takers. Meanwhile, productivity startup Superhuman (formerly known as Grammarly) acquired YC-backed note-taker Fathom last month.
