Cristiano Ronaldo has said he will retire “soon”, with the 40-year-old admitting it would be difficult to end his illustrious career as he has been planning his life after football for some time.

The Al Nasr striker is the all-time leading scorer with 952 goals for club and country. He said last month that he aims to score 1,000 goals before he quits playing the game.

When asked when he would hang up his shoes, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner replied: “Soon.”

“I think I’m ready. It’s going to be very, very difficult,” he said in an interview with Piers Morgan’s Uncensored magazine published Tuesday.

“But I’ve been preparing for my future since I was 25, 26, 27 years old. I think I can withstand that pressure. There’s nothing like the adrenaline that comes when you score a goal in soccer.”

“But everything has a beginning and everything has an end. I’m going to spend more time on myself and my family raising my children.”

The former Manchester United forward says he is still chasing results despite ending his disappointing second spell at the club three years ago.

United finished in 15th place last season, their worst result since being relegated in the 1973-74 season.

“It’s a shame, because this is one of the most important clubs in the world and one that is still close to my heart,” Ronaldo said.

“They have no structure. I hope that changes now and in the future because the potential of the club is great.”

“They’re not going in the right direction. And I don’t think it’s just the manager and the players… but he’s doing his best. What will he do? Miracles are impossible,” Ronaldo said, referring to coach Ruben Amorim.
