An eight-year-old girl has been hospitalized after being seriously injured by a wolf in a cage at a German zoo.
The girl was with two other children and a staff member when at least one wolf attacked her on Wednesday morning at the Johannismuehle wildlife park south of Berlin, police said in a statement on Wednesday.
A special event for children was being held at the facility at the time of the incident, The Associated Press reported, citing Teltow-Fleming district officials.
Keepers intervened before the two other girls in the arctic wolf’s cage were attacked, according to the Associated Press.
Police investigating the incident said the injured girl was airlifted to hospital, but the other girls appeared to be unharmed.
The zoo will remain closed until at least Nov. 2, according to its website.
The attack is the latest in a series of incidents involving captive animals that have made headlines in recent months.
A Dutch zookeeper was killed on Tuesday after being attacked by a leopard at the safari park where he worked three days earlier.
Earlier this month, a man was attacked and killed by a tiger in the UK after entering the animal’s enclosure at a wildlife park.
In September, a tiger trainer associated with Tiger King Joe Exotic was attacked and killed by one of the big cats at the Oklahoma sanctuary where he worked.
Meanwhile, the Associated Press reported that a wolf bit a woman in a Hamburg shopping district earlier this year, citing authorities as believed to be the first such attack since wolves returned to Germany in 1998.
