Voters vote inside the new Chicago Board of Elections “supersite” at 175 North State Street during the Illinois Primary In-the-Loop on March 17, 2026, as registered party members select candidates for key elections including U.S. Senate, Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General, Secretary of State, U.S. House of Representatives seats, State House, and Cook County. He will be running for a variety of judicial positions ahead of the Nov. 3 general election.

Democrats won the race for a seat on the Wisconsin Supreme Court by a 20-point margin, but Republicans won a special election for a Georgia House seat by a much narrower margin than in 2024.

Tuesday’s two elections highlight strong headwinds for President Donald Trump and his Republican Party heading into the 2026 midterm elections, which could shift the balance of power in Washington and loosen Mr. Trump’s grip on power.

Democratic Court of Appeals Judge Chris Taylor won a 10-year term on the Wisconsin Supreme Court, defeating conservative Court of Appeals Judge Maria Lazar by about 20 points, according to an Associated Press tally.

The race was much quieter than last year’s Supreme Court race in Wisconsin, which became the most expensive state Supreme Court race in history. tesla Its owner, Elon Musk, has poured huge sums of money into defeated conservative Republican candidates.

Mr. Taylor’s 20-point victory is nearly double that of Judge Susan Crawford, who defeated Mr. Musk-backed Judge Brad Schimel by about 10 points in 2025. The victory gives liberals a 5-2 majority on the Wisconsin high court.

Meanwhile, in Georgia, Republican Clayton Fuller defeated Democrat Sean Harris by about 12 points in a special election runoff for the House seat vacated by former Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, according to an Associated Press tally. Mr. Fuller’s victory, backed by Mr. Trump, would give the House a slim Republican majority of 217 Republicans to 214 Democrats, effectively bridging the gap by one party-line vote for Speaker Mike Johnson.

But this victory may be of little consolation for Republicans, as Democrats have dominated the race. Green led the district by 29 points in 2024, more than double Fuller’s margin of victory.

The results could bode well for Democrats, who hope to retain Sen. Jon Ossoff’s seat in the Peach State and have a chance at winning a majority in the Senate.
