President Donald Trump on Friday reiterated his displeasure at losing out on the Nobel Peace Prize, calling it a disgraceful and embarrassing decision that left a stain on Norway, which hosts the Nobel Committee.
Hours after the committee awarded this year’s award to Navi Pillay, the former International Criminal Court judge who oversaw the United Nations report concluding that Israel committed genocide in Gaza, President Trump launched into a tirade against Norway.
President Trump called Pillay a “mystery” during a campaign rally in Syracuse, New York. “I’ve never heard of that person. Nobody knew.”
Trump has expressed disappointment at not winning the award every year since becoming president.
“This is an indelible stain on the country of Norway and the people who made such a disgraceful and embarrassing decision,” Trump said.
He listed a number of conflicts that he claimed he had played a role in resolving, and said, without providing evidence, that he had helped prevent wars from breaking out between North Korea and South Korea, Japan and North Korea, and China and Taiwan.
“The Nobel Peace Prize has been forever discredited by a handful of radical ideologues who are anti-democratic and truly enemies of civilization. And Norway, we will not forget.”
